Day 6: Shadows and Fog
Directed By: Woody Allen
Starring: Woody Allen, Mia Farrow, John Malkovich, John Cusack, Madonna, and Kenneth Mars.
Released: 1992
Genre: Black & White Dramedy
*What a lineup!
This is the second Woody Allen film I've seen--the other, Bananas, is just as intriguing. I'm really curious about what runs through Woody Allen's mind.
Shadows and Fog takes place in one foggy evening of an indiscriminate city. Allen and a band of citizen watchers are out to catch an infamous strangler who catches victims unaware with a piano wire (although he's also been known to slit people's throats from ear-to-ear). Throughout the evening, Allen's character gets himself into all sorts of complicated situations. There are vigilantes, a sniffing clairvoyant, a sword swallower, and a brothel. What's not to love?
Max Kleinman--a bumbling clerk prone to nervous gestures and mumbling. Everybody seems to think he's the strangler, despite his incompetence in just about everything he attempts to do throughout the movie.
*Badass moment--escaping a crowd of vigilantes and police by blowing black pepper into their eyes.
Irmy--a naive sword swallower who runs away from the circus after she finds her sleazy clown boyfriend in the sack with Madonna--I mean, the tightrope walker. She has several things going for her, the least of which is a sweet hobo hat. By the end of the movie, she's found a baby and made $700 sleeping with John Cusack (who coincidentally looks like Tedy Mosby).
*Badass moment--Playing hard-to-get with John Cusack's character until he forks over $700 for an hour with her. I think his starting offer was $20. Damn.

John Cusack circa 1991, Ted Mosby lookalike.
Spiro the Clairvoyant--a bald fortune teller, famed for using his olfactory skills to read people. He sniffs Kleinman and reveals that he has a sherry glass in his pocket. Naturally, Kleinman isn't really the killer, but that sort of fact isn't important in this sort of movie.
*Badass moment--C'mon. He can access psychic powers by sniffing people. What else do you need to get through life?
If you're a Woody Allen fan (and you've watched more than Midnight in Paris), you'll enjoy Shadows and Fog. If this is your first time with Allen, be warned: his movies are different. They don't always make the sense they should or even resolve. They may leave you wanting more. Then again, maybe that's exactly what he wants.
